Why offsite

The 3-2-1 rule, and where this server fits

A backup on the same machine, or in the same office, fails with it. The 3-2-1 rule keeps one copy somewhere else. A storage server is that somewhere else.

Size my backups
  1. 3copies of your data — the original plus two backups.
  2. 2kinds of storage — for example your office NAS and a server.
  3. 1copy offsite — on a storage server like these, away from your building.
What people store

Built for data you cannot afford to lose

Offsite backups

Send nightly copies of your servers, databases and office files to a machine outside your building, so a fire, theft or ransomware attack on site does not take the backups with it.

File archives

Keep years of invoices, records and project files you rarely open but must not lose, without filling the disks of your working servers.

Your own file cloud

Install Nextcloud and give your team shared folders and phone sync on storage you control, instead of paying per user for a foreign service.

Media and CCTV

Store photo libraries, video projects or exported CCTV footage on terabytes of disk, reachable from anywhere over a 10 Gbps port.

Bring your own tools

Root access means you run what you like

These are some of the tools you can install and run yourself. Tap one to see what it is for.

rsync

Mirror folders over SSH, sending only what changed since the last run.

restic

Encrypted, deduplicated snapshots. Data is encrypted on your machine before it leaves.

BorgBackup

Compressed, deduplicated and encrypted archives with easy pruning of old versions.

Veeam

Add the server as a Linux backup repository for Veeam Backup & Replication.

Nextcloud

A self-hosted file cloud with desktop and phone sync for your team.

MinIO

Run your own S3-compatible bucket for any app or backup tool that speaks S3.

  4. Point your backups at it

Install the backup tool you prefer and schedule your first run. Test a restore before you rely on it.

Questions

Storage hosting, answered

What is storage hosting?
A virtual server with a large amount of disk space and full root access, built for keeping data rather than serving busy websites. Plans run from 1 TB to 16 TB, from KES 2,000 a month.
How is it different from a normal VPS?
Our VPS plans use fast SSD or NVMe storage for websites and databases. Storage plans use SATA drives, which give far more space for the price but are slower. That trade suits backups, archives and media, not a busy online shop.
Is this a good server for backups?
Yes. It is a separate machine outside your office, so it can be the offsite copy in a 3-2-1 backup plan: three copies of your data, on two kinds of storage, with one copy offsite.
Which backup software can I use?
Anything that runs on Linux or writes over SSH, SFTP or S3. Common choices are rsync, restic, BorgBackup, Veeam (as a Linux repository), Nextcloud and MinIO. You have root access, so you install and configure what you need.
Can I back up Windows computers and servers?
Yes, with a backup tool that can send data over SFTP, SSH or to an S3-compatible service such as MinIO that you run on the server. Veeam users can add the server as a Linux repository.
Is my data encrypted?
You choose. Tools such as restic and BorgBackup encrypt your data on your own machine before it is uploaded, so only you hold the key. Keep that key somewhere safe: without it the backups cannot be restored.
Do you manage the server for me?
No. Storage plans are self-managed: you get full root access and decide what runs on the server. If you would like help setting up your backups, message us on WhatsApp.
Can I move to a bigger plan later?
Yes. Ask us to move you to a larger plan when your backups outgrow the current one.
